The sheriff’s office also received reports of a derailed train in Waverly, Chief Houchin said, adding, “They didn’t require any emergency assistance, so we’re hoping it’s very minor.”

Trump personally owes over $454 million stemming from the ruling made by Judge Arthur Engoron back in February. Here’s what happens if Trump can’t secure the bond:Seizing bank accounts and cashIn theory, officials can begin the complicated legal process of taking his assets, barring any other strategic legal maneuvering from state prosecutors and countering from Trump’s legal team. “They walk in and give it to the manager,” said Adam Pollock, a former assistant New York State Attorney General who now specializes in judgment enforcement at Pollock Cohen LLP. “The attorney general’s office is the largest firm in New York State, if you think about it as a law firm. PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday is expected to tour the blood-stained classroom building where the 2018 Parkland high school massacre happened, accompanied by some victims' family members who are pushing for stricter gun laws and improved school safety. When Harris goes inside, she will see bullet-pocked walls and floors still covered in dried blood and broken glass. Schachter said while there is disagreement over gun laws, school safety brings the sides together. During Harris' visit, the White House says, she will announce a program to provide technical assistance and training to Florida and the other 20 states that have similar “red flag laws." Even officials who don't support stronger gun laws learn from the tours, leading to better discussions, Moskowitz said.

Here is what the commission found in a report released Friday, and some of the reactions:GUNS NOT SEIZEDLaw enforcement should have seized Card’s guns and put him in protective custody weeks before he committed the deadliest mass shooting in state history, the commission concluded. “I’m in agreement with the committee’s findings as far as they go, and I do think it’s a legitimate point that the Sagadahoc Sheriff’s Office could have done more to intervene,” he said. Janet Mills, who helped assemble the panel, said its work is of “paramount importance for the people of Maine.” She said she would “carefully review” the report. Maine State Police and the sheriff’s office did not respond to calls seeking comment. The commission, led by a former chief justice of Maine’s highest court, plans to schedule more meetings and issue a final report in the summer.

A commission investigating the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, concluded on Friday that local law enforcement officers should have taken the gunman, Robert R. Card II, into custody and seized his weapons before he killed 18 people on Oct. 25. The decision to instead give Mr. Card’s family responsibility for removing his weapons was “an abdication of law enforcement’s responsibility,” the commission wrote in its 30-page interim report, intended to provide early findings to legislators who are weighing several proposals for changes to the state’s gun laws, spurred by the events. The local sheriff’s department had “sufficient probable cause” to take Mr. Card into custody and remove his weapons because of a “likelihood of serious harm,” the commission said in its report. The seven-member commission has held seven public meetings since last November, collecting testimony from Mr. Card’s Army Reserve supervisors, local and state police officers, as well as survivors and family members of the victims. The panel has pressed witnesses for details of their actions in the months leading up to the shooting, when the gunman displayed increasingly erratic and paranoid behavior, convinced that people he did not know were calling him a pedophile.

CNN —A vigil will be held Monday afternoon for Laken Hope Riley, an Augusta University nursing student who was found dead after jogging on the University of Georgia campus last week, as her suspected killer’s immigration status has drawn the scrutiny of Republican leaders. Riley, who was a UGA student until May 2023, was found dead Thursday near a lake on the university’s campus from blunt force trauma, according to UGA Police Chief Jeff Clark. Riley’s killing has left the University of Georgia to grieve two tragic deaths that occurred less than a day apart: Her body was discovered just hours after the death of a UGA student the previous night. The Monday afternoon vigil will be co-hosted by Riley’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority at UGA in remembrance of both of the dead students, the university said.
